Description

The land of Jean's Urban Forest Farm, originally called the Tideman Johnson Farm, has been growing organic fruits and vegetables since 1880 and is a recognized 'Century Farm' with the Oregon Farm Bureau. The 2 acres of gardens and orchards are inside Portland city limits along Johnson Creek in the valley of a quaint forested canyon. This property is buffered by 20 acres of protected forest that makes up a portion of the Springwater Corridor, a 20-mile long pedestrian and bike path connecting multiple natural areas between neighborhoods along the creek.

The land's current owner, Prof. Steven Johnson, was a founding member of Tilth in the 1970's and locally responsible for successfully campaigning the City of Portland to increase protections for natural waterways from the increasing impact of unregulated industrial pollution to restore critical salmon habitat and surrounding biodiversity of this an other urban greenspaces.

For the last 30 years, he has welcomed small-scale organic CSA farmers and farm-based education organizations to operate on site. The list includes one of Portland's very first CSA's, 'Urban Bounty' in the early 1990's, 47th Avenue Farm in the early 2000's, Portland State University's 'Learning Gardens' in the mid 2000's, Oregon Tilth in the late 2000's, Myriad Growers in the early 2010's, Rising Stone Farm and Mother Earth School in the mid 2010's, Sotoi Gardens and the Institute of Permaculture Education for Children in the late 2010's, and Nurture By Nature, the current farm tenant and steward since 2020.

Since the Covid pandemic, the farm's produce has primarily been donated to mutual aid organizations, shared with volunteers and educational program participants and utilized as sustenance for the resident caretakers. Nowadays, the majority of the farm's income comes from community education workshops and from the small on-site grade school program, 'Farm Days.' In 2023, the Jean's Farm manager, Matt Bibeau, presented on the farm's educational activities at IFOAM's Youth Organic Agriculture Summit in Taiwan.
