Hanspeter Schmidt studied at the University of Freiburg and the University of Georgia, Athens, School of Law. After judical clerkships he entered private practice. Since 1992 he focused on providing for legal councel to companies and associations working in organic agriculture and with organic products. Some clients are producers and processors, some are certifiers and many farmers. Some are governments or public authorities. He works for clients from Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Australia.

IAK Agrar Consulting GmbH
As an agricultural extension and consulting company IAK has been advising conventional farms on their transition to organic agriculture as well offering specific expertise on organic production techniques, processing and marketing for the last 15 years. IAK works both in Germany and internationally. In donor funded projects in international cooperation IAK has also been offering training on organic farming as well as supporting the development of national organic regulations and standards.

The focus of the BIO initiative is to create standards and quality assurance programs for biological production in the plant and animal field, thus offering a simple, transparent and easy-to-understand assessment of products. In the end, however, it is also a prerequisite for how much animal protection has been taken into account during the production of a product. As a result, higher standards and more animal welfare justify better positioning for the producers and competitors.
