Description

A. Overview

Go Green Malawi is a community-based environmental organisation based in Nkhata Bay, Northern Malawi. We bring people together to restore damaged ecosystems, support climate-smart livelihoods, and strengthen community resilience so that both people and nature can thrive.

Working side by side with local communities, Go Green Malawi helps design and scale practical, low-cost solutions that are easy to maintain and rooted in local knowledge. This approach ensures that positive change continues long after individual projects have finished.

B. What we do

Go Green Malawi works with communities, schools, and local authorities to restore forests and landscapes, promote regenerative and climate-smart agriculture, and reduce waste through circular systems that keep materials in use for longer. We also support conservation education, youth leadership, and sustainable management of Lake Malawi and its fisheries.

Programmes include tree planting and nursery development, farmer field schools in permaculture and soil and water conservation, digital tools for agriculture, and systems for waste sorting, recovery, and recycling. Through demonstration plots, seasonal clinics, and practical field guides, farmers and youth can see what works in real conditions and adapt it to their own needs.

C. Our core programmes

1. Reforestation and tree nurseries: Community and school nurseries, planting campaigns, and community-led care to help trees survive and grow.
2. Climate-smart agriculture and permaculture: Soil and water management, diversified gardens, composting, agroforestry, and adaptive cropping calendars delivered through farmer field schools.
3. Digital innovation in agriculture: Mobile tools, data collection, and advisory services that support smart farming decisions, climate resilience, and market access.
4. Waste sorting, recovery, and recycling: Community and school collection systems, clean-up campaigns, and partnerships with social enterprises to recover and reuse materials.
5. Conservation education and youth engagement: Eco-clubs, teacher training, and youth-led initiatives that build a culture of environmental stewardship.
6. Lake and fisheries protection: Community awareness on responsible fishing, co-management of resources, shoreline clean-ups, and restoration of aquatic habitats.
7. Farmer outreach and research: Participatory training, seasonal clinics, and evidence-based practices that respond to local climate and livelihood realities.

D. How we work

Go Green Malawi uses a local-first approach, with a Nkhata Bay-based team working closely with smallholder farmers, youth and women’s groups, schools, fishers, and local enterprises. All activities are co-ordinated with district departments in forestry, agriculture, fisheries, and environment to ensure alignment and long-term support.

Programmes are co-designed with communities, focus on simple and scalable solutions, and are backed by monitoring, evaluation, and learning so that approaches can be continuously improved. Partners can expect practical collaboration, efficient programme delivery, and transparent reporting, alongside strong community ownership that underpins long-term sustainability.
