- Set of principles and attributes | Based on a work with small and family farmers, promoting its transition towards organic farming, we are assessing the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and biodiversity, as environmental indicators that can be used to guide the development and assessment of transformation processes towards sustainable food systems |
- Drivers and indicators of sustainable production and consumption | Based on a work with small and family farmers, Bio Regions and GIAHS portuguese systems, prodution and consumption indicators are used to understand and assess societal transformations towards sustainable food systems and diets. This work is also developed in other Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), under the activities of the Council of Food and Nutrition Security of the CPLP (CONSAN – CPLP) |
- Actual data on sustainable production and consumption | We can deliver data collected in the referred works, developed mainly in the north and center of Portugal, as well as information related with Portuguese good practices, successful cases, dissemination. With the National Rural Network, it is also possible to collect and deliver information of other projects, good practices, successful cases. |
- Policy reform proposals/arguments | Results from the project “Bridges between family farmers and organic farming” include a set of recommendations to policymakers, for the design of the current national policies for family farmers, young farmers and organic farming. This is a useful experience and an aim that we pursue in several other projects, namely “TERRASafe – Health territories with family farmers” and DESAFIAb – Defy family farmers through organic farming”, that may contribute as arguments for legislation and international agreements favoring sustainable food production |
- Training and education tools | We have and are developing several training and education tools in organic farming and pest control for farmers, students, technicians and general public: e and m-learning platforms, e-books and textbooks, technical brochures, App’s. We have developed a good example of this material under the project ECONewFARMERS, and at the present moment we are preparing and adjusting them to be used at the Portuguese BioRegions and among family farmers. |
- Case studies of food systems | We can provide the case studies and share the experiences collected under the projects developed with Portuguese and CPLP family farmers, and at the Bioregions and GIAHS systems (Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems) at study |
- Workshops/roundtables | We can participate in, and organize in Portugal, workshops/roundtables among government entities, food chain actors and other relevant stakeholders. We have just organized a 3 days seminar entitled “Family farming, organic farming and rural development” (18, 24 and 25 of January), with more than 300 participants. |
- Clusters/knowledge sharing | We are promoting and collaborating in the multi-stakeholder networks that are supporting the Portuguese BioRegions (Idanha-a-nova and S. Pedro do Sul), namely with the responsibilities of strategy definition, knowledge, education and training, and research design and implementation |
