1 - Set of principles and attributes | The Organic Research Centre will contribute expertise where it can to this process, building on its current work in the field of sustainability assessment of food and farming systems, and the application of health concepts to farmingto achieve healthy farm systems, produce healthy food products and public goods. |
2 - Drivers and indicators of sustainable production and consumption | Building on its existing programme, ORC will engage with project proposals and funded projects to assess and further develop the sustainability of organic food production systems, and to investigate behaviour of consumers of organic food (dietary choices, food processing versus domestic food preparation, food waste,health and sustainability impacts of such behaviours). |
3 - Actual data on sustainable production and consumption | As part of existing projects ORC is involved with data collection and interpretation of organic food systems in the UK and elsewhere and will, where permitted and able, share data with the programme. ORC intends, with partners,to develop further data resources with respect to system sustainability assessment, organic production and financial performance, and organic retail, consumption and other market data. |
4 - Policy reform proposals/arguments | Building on ORC’s extensive track record with respect to organic farming policy development, implementation and evaluation, including work for the EU Commission, national and regional governments, ORC will contribute expertise where it can to this topic. |
5 - Training and education tools | ORC will continue its engagement with current on-line knowledge exchange initiatives including www.orgprints.org, www.agricology.co.uk, and www.farmknowledge.orgas well as publications such as the Organic Farm Management Handbook and joint technical guides with FIBL. ORC will investigate the potential for publishing a series of organic farming text books linked to on-line educational resources and distance learning qualifications provided with SRUCaimed at professionals and agricultural students.ORC will also investigate options to produce a book on the sustainability and health impacts of organic food production and diets aimed at citizens and policy-makers. |
6 - Case studies of food systems | ORC will make available results of suitable case-studies undertaken as part of other funded projects, including work on crop diversification in farming systems and human diets, agroforestry, and sustainable livestock production systems. |
7 - Workshops/roundtables | ORC will contribute expertise where it can to such workshops and roundtables, including potentially hosting at suitable UK venues and/or chairing relevant ones, building on the experience of the OFSP workshop held at ORC in April 2015. |
8 - Clusters/knowledge sharing | ORC will work both within the UK and at the European level toenhance knowledge exchange between stakeholders with respect to its sustainability and health assessment tools and concepts. |
