- Drivers and indicators of sustainable production and consumption | Availability of organic food produced locally through sustainable development approach and to find out the potential to achieve self sufficiency in production based on the natural resources like land, water, livestock, forest –flora and fauna available in the region. Key tools would include getting the region declared as organic and holistic sustainable development. |
- Actual data on sustainable production and consumption | "A baseline study was conducted to see the production and consumption. 10,000 hector of land are under cultivation. Mostly are used for production of organic barely and vegetables. Ladakh being elevated above 9000-14000 feet above sea level, the cold temperature doesn’t allow the growing period to more than 5-6 months in a year. Agriculture and animal husbandry are the back bone of the economy. The demand for vegetables and fruits from Indian army alone is 18,000 metric ton a year. Similar requirement is from the hoteliers and restaurants for the visiting tourists in Ladakh. More than 250 thousand tourists visit Ladakh in a year. The Cooperative Marketing agency is facilitating the Army supply and the local market consumption can be validated through market survey in terms of supply and sale. Ladakh has an advantage to produce off season agricultural products being cold arid region in Indian sub continent and opens up the sustainable market to supply to rest of the Indian cities." |
- Policy reform proposals/arguments | Discussions and campaigns are being held at local government level to prepare a policy document to get the region declared as Organic with objective to achieve self sustaining production. Ladakh have more than 35000 hectors of cultivable land showing high potential for sustainable production. The Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council a locally elected body has already endorsed the policy and is being planned for phase manner reduction in the chemical inputs. The major issue is the government food security program which enables the poorer community to obtain food items like rice, wheat, sugar on highly subsidized rates. This approach has not only affected the small farmer’s production but have brought a new food habit to eat rice which is not at all a production from the Ladakh region. |
- Training and education tools | Model Eco village concept for exposure and training are established. It remained very effective. It is a practical demonstration and the visitor do exchange views and discuss the positive and negative benefits of the model. It is being done on holistic approach basis .Eco village concept is a way of life to live healthy and on sustainable production basis. It allows tradition, culture, social values and Eco tourism as part of the program. |
- Case studies of food systems | Case studies were done in Eco villages to see the results. It is one of the best methods to show results and the success stories of the transformation for sustainable food production and consumption. |
