Deliverable | Notes |
---|---|
- Set of principles and attributes | I have developed a set of on-farm sustainability indicators, as part of the IFOAM/ SOAAN Organics 3.0 initiative; these indicate some attributes of sustainable farming in a way useful for farmers. |
- Drivers and indicators of sustainable production and consumption | Our new ECOSOLA project (with Oldenburg University, funded by DAAD) will measure the extent of food gardening in our area, and evaluate Participatory Guarantee Systems in South Africa. My doctoral students in Uganda and Zambia are evaluating those organic sectors. |
- Actual data on sustainable production and consumption | As in Deliverable 2. |
- Policy reform proposals/arguments | Our work with the Centre of Excellence for Food Security has many policy-linked research projects. |
- Training and education tools | My Rainman Landcare Foundation has developed a series of organic farming courses; I also assisted FiBL with the development of the African Organic Farming Manual (available for free download on the web); mainly aimed at farmers. The ECOSOLA project is also expanding a course I developed (MPhil) for Sustainability Instititute, into a course useful for our university and Univ. Dar es Salaam (Prof Pius Yanda). We are also working with IFAD funding on assisting Eastern Cape farmers to reduce climate change vulnerability. |
- Case studies of food systems | All of the above, especially Kos en Fynbos urban food gardens and SA PGS farming groups will be relevant case studies. |
- Workshops/roundtables | I will be happy to participate as required, and to help organize, using my African network. |
- Clusters/knowledge sharing | Trying to set up a Collaborative Centre for Agro-ecology and Climate Change. |
